Alan is  UK barrister with over 8 years experience specialising in international and domestic Commercial law and Arbitration, working both in-house and in private practice. The primary focus of his expertise is in advising, drafting and  conducting  litigation and arbitration ( including ADR and Mediation) in complex commercial contract, domestic and international insurance/re-insurance, banking and construction cases. I have acted as a senior team adviser/ lead-litigator in both UK and  EMEA  commercial litigation and arbitration. I like to think I do and can get the best out of any team I am leading,  achieving “in-time” and highly successful outcomes on any project or objective. 

 

A fluent French speaker (including technical legal) Alan has conducted  construction and insurance/re-insurance arbitrations in French and English.

 

Insurance/Reinsurance

 

Alan is very experienced in the domestic and international aspects of Insurance/Re-Insurance Law, advising on liability and drafting. He has a wealth of experience gained both in Bermuda and the UK.

 

Banking and Finance

 

Alan has considerable expertise in Banking and Finance Law transactions, in particular advising upon and drafting structured multipartite domestic and international agreements. He has acted for corporates mounting multi-million GBP and USD claims against LLoyds Banking Group, Barclays International and others in respect of IHRP mis-selling, fraudulent and negligent misrepresentation and professional negligence. Alan has also acted for the State Bank of India providing a complete revision of its Lending T&Cs.

 

Construction

 

Alan has particular skill in commercial construction disputes. In 2014 he managed to avert full-scale and costly litigation in respect of a GBP 15 million project in the UK by his firm but skilful handling of protracted negotiations in respect of a JCT "costs plus" dispute. He has conducted arbitration,mediation and negotiation in both the UK and Europe. His notable success was leading a team of 8 international lawyers in a lengthy ICC Arbitration in Paris representing one of the largest Insurance companies in Rwanda ( SONARWA) in respect of both insurance liability and a FIDIC contract dispute against a major African-based European Construction Company (Thomas & Piron GL S.A.). 

 

Compliance and Regulatory

 

Alan has extensive experience of compliance and regulatory requirements and  procedures both within the UK, EMEA,  US and Caribbean ( significantly Bermuda).

 

Alan is rightly  regarded as possessing extremely high standards of commercial contractual drafting skills. Alan's commercial judgment is considered first rate.

Given his considerable experience and expertise Alan is an extremely effective communicator and has superb presentational skills.He has given lectures, led seminars and carried out training for his legal peers and their employees. He has a meticulous approach to organisation, preparation and presentation. Alan is extremely professional but  personable, approachable, tactful and always remains focussed. He is "results" driven.

 

Alan possesses the experience, presence and gravitas to act at the highest level in transactional, litigious in advisory capacities, from advising at Government ministerial level to conducting multi-million pound negotiations and arbitrations. He has a considerable experience of direct liaison in regulation enforcement, compliance awareness ( regulatory accountancy and statutory), drafting, negotiation and litigation involving inter alia the HMRC, BIS, FCA, SFO, BMA (Bermudan Monetary Authority).
